Novelty Tweed Pencil Skirt: Butterick 5466
Its Fri-yayy!! Lol! Hey y'all! I hope you've had a fantastic, productive week and ready to enjoy your weekend! I plan to sew (duh Brittany lol), sleep in, do a little cleaning, edit two videos and take blog pics! I'll also begin working on an upcoming collaboration I have with TÉLIO (so excited about it!!!) starting in September!! I think you all will love it! A full month of sewing to help us transition into fall sewing with some fun staples! Speaking of fun staples, lets chat about my new tweed pencil skirt!
I can't believe this is my first pencil skirt! What have I been doing for 4 years?!!! Pencil skirts are one of my favorites styles of skirts. They are perfect and suitable for just about everything. For my first skirt I decide to try Butterick 5466. This skirt has instantly become my go-to pencil skirt pattern!
I cut the size 20 for the waist and merged the lines over to a 22 for the hips. The fit is perfect! I made View E on the pattern and did not make any adjustments to it. For fabric, I use this fabulous Novelty Tweed from Measure Fabrics.
I'll be honest when I first got the fabric, I was a little nervous. Tweed is a new fabric for me so I was a little worried about how it'll sew up. Its also multi-colored striped and just plain beautiful to me! Needless to say, I didn't want to mess it up! I made sure I had new rotary cutter blade, new 90 needle and clips. I noticed the pins poked through and loosened some of the fabric up so the clips helped hold everything together for me.
Before beginning, I knew using a serger to finish was out of the question. I wanted a really pretty finish, so I ran out to Walmart and grabbed a 3 pack of Gold Metallic Extra Wide Double Fold Bias Tape. To finish the seams, I simply sandwiched the raw edges into the bias tape and sewed it down. For the hem, I did a blind hem finish.
I'm so pleased and proud of my skirt! I paired it went a simply white top I had in my closet and new Jessica Simpson purple pumps. I also threw on my new lambskin jacket that I recently made using McCalls 7549 View A.
I made this jacket before and did a shameless copy of the model! This time, I only wanted to do the topstitching and not add any batting to it. I originally thought I was going to do all of the topstitching but after doing the first line of stitching, I scratched that plan immediately! LOL! The middle sections were all I could do plus a little topstitching along the seam lines. I think that was the right call!
The fabric I used is a the Dark Peach Lambskin from Measure Fabrics. I used three pieces to make it. The 7,8, and 9 sq.ft. pieces. I'd say to be on the safe side two of the 8 sq.ft would be better than the 7 sq.ft. I had nothing left and barely managed to get all 4 of the front placket pieces cut out. I made it work though.
For the lining, I used a beautiful rayon from La Finch Fabrics for my lining! So happy I have more left over because I have to make something else with this amazing fabric!
This was my first time working with lambskin and it was amazing to sew it! It cuts like butter, and sews up beautiful. Its super soft and lightweight too! I love how well these two pieces go together! The week I made these was a really great week of sewing! I think I'll have these in my closet for years to come!
