Mommy & Me Summer Leopard: Spoonflower Petal Signature Cotton ™
Hey everybody! I hope you had a beautiful weekend. I spent my Mother’s Day weekend like most of them. Rooting on my boys in their basketball game, having a great time at a friends son birthday party, relaxing, eating take out, and Sunday worship! It was perfect! Now that its Monday, its time for me to get back to sewing and sharing! So let’s start with this look Yellow Leopard top I made in Spoonflower New Petal Signature Cotton ™️.
I loved the idea of bringing animal prints to summer, so I while I was browsing all of the amazing designs Spoonflower offers, I came across this Summer Leopard in Yellow design by Domesticate and knew it’d be perfect! My original plan was to make a another version of this maxi I made last year! Although I LOVE that dress, I’m glad I thought better of it for this print. I didn't want the fabric to overwhelm me, and I felt a maxi would do that. Instead I left the bottom two tiers off, finished off the top for me, and use the other portion of the dress to make a little girls dress for Justice!
I used McCalls 7626, McCalls 7604, and McCalls 7778 (for the ties, totally optional). I cut the size 16 for this top and made no adjustments. Like I mentioned in my previous posts for my other versions, I love it! It’s a great summer top, the straps are wide enough to extra support, its not too low in the back so it has coverage and its bra-friendly! My kind of top! LOL!
I did add some yellow bias tape at the waistline seam to break up the print but that detail really isn’t showing up in photos but in person it adds a nice little touch to the top and Justice dress.
For Justice dress is used Simplicity 8853. I cut the size 3 but gave her the size 4 length! Justice is all legs lol! I went with View C but added the ruffle from View B instead of using C sleeves. Her dress came together really easy. The instructions in the pattern were well written and I had her dress finished in a couple hours. For styling lets, just say I did everything I could to talk her into wearing some sandals to take photos in, but at the end of the day……her personal styling won! LOL
Now that I’ve shown you how fabulous this fabric design is, let’s talk more about this fabric itself! I was so excited when Spoonflower reached out to invite me to be apart of the bloggers to share and spread the word about their New Petal Signature Cotton™️. If you don’t know much about Spoonflower, they are the largest indie design marketplace (over 750,000+ designs), printing amazing and unique designs onto fabric, wallpaper, and even gift wrap!
This New Petal Signature Cotton™️ will replace the Basic Cotton Ultra and Kona ® Cotton. It is a simple-weave, quilting cotton weight fabric. From my personal experience with working with it, I feel it has a crisp hand, very sturdy. I think it will be great from garments, quilting as well as other craft projects. I also noticed that after wash and drying, the color did not bled and still retained it’s vibrancy. Which was a plus because I worried if yellow would bleed onto the white! The fabric did wrinkle after drying but a quick press took care of those. I also noticed that it did soften up a little after wash but nothing too significant. It still had a sturdy, crisp hand.
With the launch of the new fabric, Spoonflower is offering 10% off 1+ yards of the Petal Signature Cotton. This promotion will run from now May 13- 19, 2019. I will be also hosting a giveaway for 3 yards of the Petal Signature Cotton over on my Instagram next week! So you have a chance to win ANY (1) design you want printed on 3 yards of the new Petal Signature Cotton! Be sure to follow me on Instagram and stay tuned for the giveaway!
