Stretch Velvet Valentines Dress: mccalls 8174
Hey friends! Its Valentines weekend! Do you have plans? Hubs and I were planning to go with close friends to Lake Havasu but we had to cancel due to work so we’re just gonna enjoy a nice quiet dinner together! I don’t know if I plan to put this dress on for the dinner since our plans changed but….. I did make it for Valentines Day so I might as well wear it, right?!
This McCalls dress is from the Early Spring Collection and I just love it! It was my favorite from the collection so I had to make it first! Let’s get into the details.
the details
I used McCalls 8174 for this dress and made View C on the pattern. For fabric, I used this Stretch Velvet in the color Brick from Melanated Fabrics! Love the lux look of this fabric and its so soft! The bodice of this dress is lined so I used a lightweight knit from my local Joann for it.
size + adjustments
For size, I cut the 18 for the bust and merged to the 22 for the hips. My bust is a 40 so I sized down to the 18 for the 38 but still found it to be big. I will probably size down to the 16 for my next version of this, so the bodice will “snap” more to the bust. You can see from my pics, it gaps a little. It’s not major but I know it can be better. Interfacing could’ve possible helped also with the stretch velvet to stabilize it a little. I plan to make it again in maybe a Ponte or a knit that has great stretch recovery.

the look
This dress is easy to wear. It does not have closures, so you can pull it on, throw on some heels and accessories and go out for a beautiful evening, or to the grocery store (do you lol)! I wore my everyday jewelry pieces and some gold sandals!

I made my dress using my Husqvarna Viking Epic 95Q! I love that machine!
