easy summer basics: butterick 4944 & simplicity 8707
Hey everybody! Happy Friday! I have been having the best couple of weeks! My mom is still in town visiting and we have been sewing non stop! LOL! So much that I had to kick her out (kidding, more like relocate) her to the kitchen! My sewing room is only big enough for one creative person! Lol!
We pulled an all nighter on Wednesday to complete these two pieces and they are so cute! I love the ease of this skirt, and the kimono is a repeat project so I knew I’d love it! I think these two are perfect for the hot summer days to come and I’m looking forward to making a couple more of these especially the skirt! Lets get into the review of them!
Pattern Used: The skirt was made using an old Butterick pattern 4944. It a mock wrap skirt and I can’t believe how much I love it! I found this pattern in my mom pattern stash last year and wanted to make a sarong wrap for a swimsuit but this pattern wasn’t quite what I had in mind for cover up but works great for an everyday skirt!
For the Kimono, I used Simplicity 8707! This is an easy mommy and me kimono, with only three pieces but lots of cute possibilities for adding trim and playing with fabrics!
Pattern Description: Butterick 4944 is a mock wrap skirt with length, overlay and tie variations. Simplicity 8707 is a Childs and Misses Kimono.
Pattern Sewing Level: Both are easy to sew patterns. The skirt took about an hour and the kimono took us about 30-40 minutes. I did the sewing, my mom did the serging!
What size did you cut?: For the skirt, I cut the XL and I LOVE the fit! Not clingy (because who has time for that in the summer) and the Kimono was cut at the L.
Were the instructions easy to follow? YES! Both of these patterns have great instructions. I was able to follow them and the illustrations to get through the projects.
What did you like or dislike about the pattern? I LOVE that the skirt has two rows of elastic in the back! That was a great surprise. I have no dislikes for either pattern!
Did you make any pattern alterations: I was a little short on fabric for the kimono, so I cut 7 inches off to get this length. I made no other adjustments or modifications to the patterns.
Where did you purchase the fabric(s)? The fabric I used was gifted to me from Fashion Fabrics Club. I just loved the colors in this Abstract Zig Zag Rayon Challis. Its a beautiful lightweight fabric, sews up nicely and has great drape to it! It’s a good fabric flowy garments.
Did you record a sew along for this pattern? No I didn’t record a sew along for these two.
Would you sew it again? YES! Like I said this was a remake for the kimono pattern but the skirt was new and I know I’ll revisit it!
Would you recommend it to others? Absolutely! Both of these are good basics for the summer. Easy throw on and go pieces!
